The Distant Flight of Birds

March 12 | 7:30 p.m.

The Distant Flight of Birds joins Nasty, Brutish & Short: A Puppet Cabaret, on Monday, March 12 to revive “The Song of the Father.”

When: March 12th at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Links Hall / 3111 N. Western Ave. / Chicago IL 60618

The night leads up to The Distant Flight of Birds, a series of original songs developed out of a six-week exploration by 16 Chicago-based artists and therapists around themes from the Grimms Brothers’ “Seven Ravens.” These songs are a meditation on the themes of the family cycles and our struggles to mend what becomes broken. The Distant Flight of Birds is a debut work-in-progress.

The Distant Flight of Birds created by Sarah Bendix, Lara Golan, and Susan Payne O’Brien will be performed by Forte Chicago singers: Leah Hungerford, Amanda Neal, Alex Salas, Alexandra Plattos Sulack, and Angela Torres-Kutkuhn. More information here.

Recommended for mature audiences.

Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the puppets from performing! Join Chicago’s most devoted puppeteers for an evening of dedicated artistry, craft, weirdness, and hilarity. Bask in the warmth of creative community in the last cold days before spring.

Wow, wow, wow.

I’m going to say it… My students are the best 🙂

Our Voice Lab students have been rehearsing for weeks, and have prepared a new production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

We have taken this opera and (hopefully) have turned it into something accessible to the opera newcomers among us, performers included. We’ve stripped away some of the music, we’ve added dialogue, and we’ve given the audience “Opera Guides”. While doing so, we made it a point to poke fun at the absurdities that often plague opera (it’s OK to laugh at those–we know they’re ridiculous).

Yes, our production is infused with humor, but it also contains moments of beautiful music and quality singing (in both German and English!).

These students have far exceeded any expectation I had for this program, and I am thrilled to be sharing it with the world.

Here’s the Facebook event. Also, grab a ticket and see the show! Did I mention that I’d be singing the Queen of the Night again?
